To Dye For - How To Dye Vintage Gloves Tutorial

Hi Cats & Kittens!

As promised here is my tutorial on how to dye vintage gloves as seen in my Vintage On Trend video '60s Pastels - Inspired By Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2014'.

I dyed some old vintage gloves that were already stained, which is why the dye looks slightly uneven but also why they were my choice for some dye crash testing :P I hope you find the tutorial useful and let me know if you give it a try! :)

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST
* Please note that some vintage fabrics, beading and thread will respond badly to hot dye processes or indeed any dye process. Please take extreme care and research the best process for your particular fabric and item before attempting to dye it.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS TUTORIAL:

  • Dye – Powder or liquid (RIT is my preferred dye but for this tutorial I used Dylon)
  • Salt
  • White Gloves  - Check whether the fabric is synthetic or not, some dyes only work with one or the other. For this tutorial I used synthetic gloves.
  • Tongs
  • Saucepan – Use an old one that you can keep just for dye
  • Wooden Spoon (sorry I forgot to take a picture of the spoon lol!)

STEP 1
Fill the saucepan to 2/3 full with water and bring to the boil.

STEP 2
Add you dye powder according to the packet directions and stir to dissolve. It doesn’t have to be exact but read the packet to get as close as possible to the correct ratios. Liquid dyes usually dissolve a lot more successfully.

STEP 3
Add salt to the boiling dye mix as per packet directions (again approximately is usually ok)

STEP 4
Pick up your gloves with the tongs and submerge them in the dye mixture. Be careful as the dye mixture is boiling hot!!

STEP 5
Let the gloves cook for as long as stated on the dye packet. Make sure you keep an eye on the items as they often rise up out of the water and if this happens the dye will take to the fabric unevenly. Be sure to watch the process and stir regularly.

STEP 6
After ‘cooking’ the gloves for the desired period, remove them from the dye using the tongs and rinse them under cold water until the water runs clear. Be careful not to drop the dye on your clothes, floor etc as you may dye them accidentally.

STEP 7
Leave the gloves to dry before wearing.

And that's it! Enjoy you freshly dyed, vintage gloves! :)
